We were contacted by a client experiencing issues with their soakaway, and after discussing the problem, it became clear that their old septic tank and drainage field had reached the end of their usable life. We arranged a free site visit to assess the situation, where Jody walked the client through the available options in detail. Together, it was decided that upgrading the existing septic tank to a modern sewer treatment plant, along with installing a new drainage field, would be the best long-term solution.

To ensure the new system would work effectively, we carried out percolation testing on the soil. This test allowed us to confirm the ground was suitable for the drainage system and calculate the size of the soakaway required. After the test results were in, we provided the client with a detailed quote, which they were happy to accept. Our office team then handled the necessary paperwork, including submitting a building control notice to the local council, and coordinated the delivery of all required materials and equipment to meet the project’s start date.

Sewage Treatment Plants Installed

On the first day, our engineers performed comprehensive health and safety checks to make the site safe for the work ahead. Once everything was secure, we began the excavation process, using a 3-tonne digger to carefully excavate the area for both the new drainage field and the sewer treatment plant. The excavated material, or muck away, was left on-site as the client wanted to repurpose it for future projects. The new tank was then carefully lowered into the prepared site, fitting perfectly into place. A building control inspector arrived to examine our work and, satisfied with the progress, signed off on the installation.

"With the tank securely in position, we proceeded to concrete it into place, ensuring stability and durability. A suction tanker was brought in to safely decommission the old septic tank which then allowed us to make the necessary connections for the new system. We then installed the new drainage field using a 100mm PVC perforated pipe grid. To do this we started by laying a 150mm bed of stone for the new pipes to rest on which was followed by an additional 200mm of stone to cover the grid. To protect the system from root intrusion, the entire setup was encased in a root-proof membrane. Once complete, the area was carefully reinstated with topsoil, leaving the site neat and tidy with no trace of the extensive work that we had carried out."
